The purpose of this study is to strengthen occupational disease surveillance in Ontario by incorporating data on causes of death among workers.
This study seeks to fill a knowledge gap regarding the relationship between occupation, industry, and mortality (death) among Ontario workers. The project will initially focus on acute causes of death among working-age adults – such as cardiovascular, respiratory, and opioid-related deaths – and will later expand to include other causes.
The Occupational Disease Surveillance System (ODSS) is a system that monitors disease outcomes among more than two million Ontario workers.
This project links occupational and health data of Ontario workers in the ODSS to mortality information from the Office of the Registrar General Deaths file (ORGD) and the Drug and Drug/Alcohol Related Death Database (DDARD).
