Canada is proposing to prohibit the use, sale, import, and export of asbestos and asbestos-containing products. Asbestos is the commercial term for a group of six naturally occurring mineral fibres. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified asbestos as a known carcinogen (Group 1). Asbestos causes mesothelioma as well as cancer of the lung, larynx, and ovary. Exposure to asbestos can also cause asbestosis and other non-malignant respiratory diseases.
Estimates from OCRC’s Burden of Occupational Cancer project were included in the Government’s regulatory impact assessment statement; specifically, that asbestos was responsible for approximately 1900 lung cancer cases and 430 mesothelioma cases in Canada in 2011.
