Jean-Yves Savoie completed his university education in chemistry with a PhD from Laval University. His postdoctoral studies in immunochemistry at the University of Alberta made him see the possibility of applying chemistry to the world of health. From then on, he directed his career towards applied research and the use of research results by joining the toxicology unit of the Laval University Hospital. In 1980, Dr. Savoie took an active part in the creation of the Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail (IRSST) and in 1984, he was appointed scientific director and in 1990, director general of the IRSST. Dr. Savoie has been a passionate promoter of research within Canada’s workers’ compensation boards and was very active within Canada’s health research institutes, chairing the Advisory Board of the CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health (2000-05). He also chaired the Research Advisory Council of the Worker Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) of Ontario, fostering the creation of new centres such as the Occupational Cancer Research Centre. Presently retired, he remains involved in the promotion, organisation and evaluation of research and in coalition building.
